Monetization

GDevelop lets you earn money from what you create: from your games, by selling them or displaying ads, and from the game art and game templates you make, by selling them on GDevelop's Asset Store. Monetizing is entirely optional, and you can combine several of these methods.

Monetizing your games

There are several methods to monetize a game:

Selling on Stores

You can sell your game on various digital storefronts such as:

  • Steam: One of the most popular platforms for PC games. You can follow our tutorial to learn how to publish your game on Steam.
  • App Stores: Including the Google Play Store for Android and the Apple App Store for iOS. You can use the built-in One-Click exporters inside GDevelop to export your game for Android and iOS.
  • Itch.io: A popular platform for indie developers to sell games. Follow our tutorial on publishing your game to Itch.io.

Using Ads

Another common method of monetization is through advertisements:

  • Google Admob: A widely used platform to integrate ads into mobile games. You can follow our tutorial to learn how to integrate Admob into your mobile games.
  • Other Ad Networks: There are many other ad networks available and that you can integrate into your game. If you plan on using another one, you will need to integrate the ad network's SDK into your game and this requires some good programming knowledge.

Hosting on GDevelop's Platform: gd.games

We also offer a unique solution through our hosting platform, gd.games. By hosting your game on gd.games, you automatically earn GDevelop credits based on the number of sessions your game generates on the website. This is a straightforward way to start earning without needing to manage complex ad integrations or store listings.

Note

If you choose to host your game on gd.games, it's important to know that you can opt out of this monetization feature if you prefer not to display ads on your game page and earn money. Just go to your game dashboard, open the "Marketing & Ads" tab, and disable the option.

These credits are added to your account and can be used within GDevelop to purchase assets, templates, marketing packages, and more, allowing you to reinvest in your game's development.

If you'd rather receive real money, your game earnings can also be cashed out from your games dashboard, once you've accumulated at least $60 USD.

Publishing on platforms with integrated ads

Some platforms have integrated ad networks that allow you to monetize your game without needing to integrate an ad network yourself. Good examples are:

  • Facebook Instant Games: For those developing for Facebook Instant Games, there are specific monetization strategies you can employ, you can follow this dedicated tutorial.
  • Poki: A platform for web games that allows you to earn money through ads and sponsorships. Check out our tutorial on publishing to Poki to learn more.
  • CrazyGames: Another web game platform that offers monetization through ads and sponsorships. Check out this tutorial to learn more.
  • Playgama and other HTML5 portals: The Playgama Bridge extension gives you a single SDK to publish the same game on many web portals, and to display their rewarded and interstitial ads, without writing platform-specific code for each one.

Selling on GDevelop's Asset Store

Your game is not the only thing you can sell: the Asset Store, built into GDevelop and browsed by creators directly from the editor, is open to external sellers. Two kinds of products can be sold there, and both start with the same step: becoming a seller, where you'll find the revenue sharing, the pricing and licensing options, and how payments are made.

Selling an asset pack

An asset pack is a set of game art (sprites, tilesets, UI, 3D models) or audio, sold as a single product. This is a good fit if you're an artist or a musician: you produce the content once, and creators reuse it in their own projects.

Once your pack's content, thumbnail and preview images are ready, follow the Submit an asset pack guide: it explains how to prepare the pack, how to build objects from your art inside a GDevelop project so that assets can be installed in one click, and how to send us the files.

Selling a game template

A game template is a complete, playable GDevelop project that a creator can open, understand and turn into their own game. It's a way to monetize the work you've already done on a game: a well-structured project, clean events, and clear documentation are what make a template valuable to a buyer.

To prepare and submit one, see the Submit a game template guide, which covers choosing a scope, the quality expectations for the project, and the submission process.
